What happens when you bring math into storytime? For Hayde Cervantes, an alumna Cotsen Fellow at Edison Language Academy, the answer was joyful engagement. After learning about Mathematizing Children’s Literature at the NCTE-NCTM conference, Hayde teamed up with her Cotsen Mentor, Alma Williams, to put these ideas into practice.
Inspired by Karen Recinos’ dual language CGI training, where the book Paletero Man was used as a translanguaging example, they tried the same approach with Hayde’s students. Starting with a Notice and Wonder activity, students observed a single picture from the story and turned their observations into math story problems.
The result? Students discovered that math can live inside their favorite stories, and loved every moment of it. Hayde and Alma encourage other teachers to give it a try: open a book, add a math lens, and watch students’ curiosity come alive.
