What happens when you bring math into storytime? For Hayde Cervantes, an alumna Cotsen Fellow at Edison Language Academy, the answer was joyful engagement.聽After learning about Mathematizing Children鈥檚 Literature at the NCTE-NCTM conference, Hayde teamed up with her Cotsen Mentor, Alma Williams, to put these ideas into practice.
Inspired by Karen Recinos鈥�聽dual language CGI training, where the book Paletero Man聽was used as a translanguaging example, they tried the same approach with Hayde鈥檚 students. Starting with a Notice and Wonder activity, students observed a single picture from the story and turned their observations into math story problems.
The result? Students discovered that math can live inside their favorite stories, and loved every moment of it. Hayde and Alma encourage other teachers to give it a try: open a book, add a math lens, and watch students鈥� curiosity come alive.
